A Message from the Head of School

Welcome to the Steppingstone School Web Site. We invite you to come in and explore gifted education and the Steppingstone approach to teaching and developing young-kindergarten through grade 8 gifted learners.

Giftedness speaks to the potential for high performance - over and above the norm. However, it involves more than just cognitive and academic learning; it also involves social and emotional aspects that must be addressed but which are often overlooked.

Although there is a genetic component to giftedness, high performance is greatly influenced by nurturing and instruction. Therefore, we approach each student as an individual with compassion and understanding. We employ the best instructional techniques, technology, and practices, while taking into account all aspects of giftedness to challenge each child to reach his or her full potential.

For the teachers and staff of Steppingstone, teaching gifted children is more than a profession with its accompanying professional rewards. We believe it is a calling, and when executed well, it can profoundly and positively impact each student, his/her family, and the world. It is estimated that 2 percent of the population is gifted; giftedness crosses all ethnic, economic, and gender lines. Wouldn't it be great if we could ensure that from this gifted population the world is given highly trained, well-balanced, motivated, gifted, and talented doctors, engineers, scientist, teachers, artist, musicians leaders, and parents? Sadly, there are too many myths and practices in our educational institutions that undermine the identification, recognition, and development of gifted children.
