A Message from the Head of School
Welcome to the Steppingstone School Web Site. We invite you to come in and explore gifted education and the
Steppingstone approach to teaching and developing elementary school aged gifted learners.
Giftedness speaks to the potential for high performance over and above the norm. It is more than just the
cognitive and academics, it has social and emotional aspects that must also be addressed, but is often overlooked.
Although there is a genetic component to the gift, high performance is greatly influenced by nurture and
instruction. Therefore, we approach each student as an individual with compassion and understanding and with
the best instructional techniques; technology, practices, and taking into account all aspects of giftedness
to help each child reach his or her potential.
For the teachers and staff of Steppingstone, teaching gifted children is more than a profession with it's
accompanying professional rewards, it is a calling that we firmly believe when executed well, can profoundly
and positively impact the student, their families and the world. It is estimated that 2 - 5% of the population
is gifted, which crosses all ethnic, racial and gender lines. Wouldn't it be great if we could ensure that from
this population the world is given highly trained, balanced, motivated, gifted and talented doctors, engineers,
scientist, teachers, artist, musicians and parents. Sadly, there are too many myths and practices in our
educational institutions that undermine their identification, recognition, and development.
