Motivating Gifted Students to be Independent Learners
2011-2012 Seminar Schedule Thursday Evenings at 7 pm
October 6: Role of Curriculum
Discussion of approaches to curriculum and how they can foster motivation in gifted learners, with a focus on Steppingstone’s own curriculum.
November 10: Role of Technological Innovations
Discussion of the use of gaming and/or technology in learning: pros and cons, what we incorporate and what we do not as well as the reasons for those decisions in regard to Steppingstone curriculum.
March 15: Role of Relationships
Discussion of how friendships between gifted kids (who may be at different ages/developmental levels but share interests/proclivities/skills) help build motivation. What parents and teachers can do to increase kids’ motivation to make the most of their capabilities and how they can know when to “back off.” Optimal levels of parental involvement vary family by family, child by child, but how can we know when we’re at the right level for our own children? Discussion of “side by side teamwork approach” versus “parental takeover”
April 19: Role of Environments
Discussion of how we can use techniques such as mindfulness to decrease anxiety, perfectionism, etc in both ourselves as parents and/or educators, and in the gifted learners themselves.
